People across Canada celebrated the nation’s flag on Feb. 15, and the residents of the Village on the Thames were among those proudly displaying the Maple Leaf.
National Flag of Canada Day commemorates the country adopting the Maple Leaf flag in 1965. While the day was first observed in 1996, this year’s Flag Day was especially important to many Canadians amidst a looming trade war with the United States.
According to CBC News, some Canadian stores were running out of flags to sell ahead of Flag Day.
Residents of the Chatham-Kent seniors living community told fun co-ordinator Diamond Zelina they wanted to do something in recognition of Flag Day “because of everything going on with the States.”
“Canadawide, people were going to have flags to show support,” and residents wanted to be involved as well, Diamond tells S&R Today.
Every resident had a Canadian flag placed on the door of their room, and there were also flags on every table in the dining room as well as in the activity room, she adds.
Diamond says celebrating Flag Day at the Village on the Thames was a way for everyone to feel a part of something bigger.
“I wanted to share this story because it’s powerful in a small way I feel,” she says. “The residents came to me for help with something they felt strongly about.”
