Residents enjoy country drives, park picnics and time together outdoors

Lanark Village residents have been making the most of summer with one of the season’s favourite activities: picnics.
In fact, picnics are such a favourite activity for residents of the Kitchener seniors living community that Lisa Rathier, the Village’s fun co-ordinator, incorporates them into the monthly activity calendar whenever she can.
These outings are a big hit with everyone, Lisa says.
“One of our favourite things to do is getting outside to enjoy the beautiful outdoor spaces in the region,” she tells S&R Today.
For the first picnic of the summer, Lanark Village residents and team members enjoyed a country drive followed by a stop at Waterloo Park, a sprawling 45-hectare urban park in Waterloo.
Lisa says it proved to be the perfect spot.
“The wonderful shaded area gave us the perfect setting for our picnic,” she says.
Of course, having high-quality food is an important part of any picnic, so the outings always include an array of sandwiches accompanied by fresh fruit and vegetables.
The picnics are also a perfect time for residents to reminisce and share stories.
“Many of the residents have memories of visiting the park with their families, and they talk about all the fun they had in the park,” Lisa says.
At the Waterloo Park picnic, some residents decided to revisit a childhood memory by going on the swings, which Lisa says they enjoyed.
Lisa notes it’s not just the residents who love these kinds of outings.
“Getting outside and visiting the places they all remember is one of my favourite things to do with the residents,” she says.
