Residents take part in their own Terry Fox Run to support cancer research

A group of Southgate Village residents participated in their own Terry Fox Run at the Kingsville, Ont. seniors living community, raising $90 for the Terry Fox Foundation.
The group, calling themselves the Southgate Storm, collected donations and completed the event by walking a course in the Village’s parking lot on Sept. 17.
Valerie Judas, Southgate Village’s fun co-ordinator, says the event was a great way for residents to come together while supporting a worthy cause.
“We had a lovely sunny late summer day with a beautiful breeze in the parking lot,” she tells S&R Today.
Valerie says the group is looking forward to participating next year, adding they will be aiming to raise even more money in the 2027 Terry Fox Run.
All money raised from the event is being donated to the Terry Fox Foundation to support cancer research across Canada.
The Terry Fox Run is an annual charity event that raises funds for cancer research. Inspired by Terry Fox, a Canadian amputee who embarked on the Marathon of Hope in 1980 on an artificial leg before cancer forced him to stop, millions worldwide walk, run, cycle or roll each September to complete his mission.
Early in 2026, the Terry Fox Foundation announced it had surpassed $1 billion in fundraising since the first run was organized in 1981.
“Terry believed that research could change the future of cancer, and Canadians have spent more than four decades helping turn that belief into action,” Michael Mazza, the Terry Fox Foundation’s CEO, says in a statement on the foundation’s website.
Valerie says Southgate residents and team members are proud to have been able to help support the foundation this year, and she is extending her gratitude to those who helped organize the event at the Village.
“Thank you to the Terry Fox Kingsville group, especially Marilyn, for helping me get things organized and set up for a successful day,” she says.
“We are glad to do our part to help Terry finish it.”
