Southgate Village has launched a program that’s piquing residents’ interest in painting and encouraging them to discover their artistic talents.
Valerie Judas, the fun co-ordinator at the Kingsville, Ont. seniors living community, says she got the idea for the Paint and Sip program after attending a class led by a local artist a few years back.
The artist, named Julie, has a YouTube channel called Julie’s Paint Party where she provides easy, step-by-step instructions to viewers on how to paint pictures.
During the first Paint and Sip event, residents followed Julie’s instructions via her YouTube channel and painted a snowman. The event also included a break, where residents enjoyed a glass of wine.
Valerie says residents did a good job keeping up; there were only a couple of video stoppages, but everyone soon caught up and the program “was great fun,” she says.
“We took about one and a half hours to do it,” Valerie tells S&R Today. “We stopped several times for a wine top-up and catching up to the next step.”
Valerie says she expects the program to grow and increase in popularity with residents.
“As this is a new program, some were shy to come out; however, the ones who did had a fantastic time and did some great creating,” she says.
“It is really fun and you can take your time.”
