This past winter in Ontario has been longer and colder than most in recent memory, so team members at Southgate Village decided to create a sunny atmosphere for the residents of the Kingsville seniors living community.
The idea that was hatched for this fun day was a beach theme that included team members and volunteers dressing up in grass skirts, Hawaiian shirts and coconut bikini tops.
“The residents had more fun laughing at the staff than anything,” Valerie Judas, Southgate Village’s fun co-ordinator, tells S&R Today.
In keeping with the event’s tropical theme, everyone received a lei to wear for the day. There was also dancing and singing in the halls as well as beach-themed games to play.
The event also featured music from Justin, one of Southgate Village’s regular entertainers, who was dressed in beach attire for his performance.
In the afternoon, residents were served sundaes with several toppings including chocolate, strawberry and caramel sauce. There were also waffle cookies, mini M&Ms, Reese’s Pieces and chopped peanuts available that residents could sprinkle on their ice cream.
Residents really liked the ice-cream treats, Valerie says.
“It ‘hit the spot,’ was one comment from a resident,” she says.
