Representatives from the S&R Group were among those attending the recent JA (Junior Achievement) World of Choices event in Sarnia, which connected high school students with local employers who introduced them to potential career paths.
S&R’s HR talent acquisition specialist Mahyar Garmsiri and director of clinical services Stephanie Vandevenne attended the May 27 event, which was held at Lambton College.
This event, which attracted about 200 students, was aimed at helping high school students discover how transferable skills contribute to career success and also encouraged them to explore a wide range of career paths and learn about required education and essential skills for various careers.
“It was a great opportunity for us to connect with our young community members who will be entering the workforce over the next five to 10 years,” Mahyar tells S&R Today.
Mahyar says he and Stephanie were busy throughout the event, meeting with many students interested in future opportunities to work in long-term care and seniors living. The two also shared their own career paths with students.
“We met with five groups of six to eight students for about 15 minutes each,” Mahyar says. “We had table discussions about their career interests, and that was our chance to share our lessons learned as we navigated our own careers.”
This is the third year the S&R Group has attended the World of Choices event, “and every year we make great connections with the students,” Mahyar says.
Aside from the event being an opportunity to help steer students towards career paths in long-term care and seniors living, Mahyar says it was also enriching for him and Stephanie because they know first-hand the value of mentorship.
“Steph and I have both benefited profoundly from the mentors in our lives, so we jumped on this opportunity to give back in any way we could,” he says.
