Community joins Waterloo Heights residents for annual pig roast

An annual Waterloo Heights tradition that engages residents, their families and staff was opened to the local community this year, providing an opportunity for people – including prospective residents – to experience life firsthand at the seniors living community.

The Waterloo Heights team chose to use the yearly pig roast as one of its monthly “senior socials,” an initiative launched this year by the S&R Group’s Seniors Living Division.

These socials are designed to introduce prospective residents to life in S&R Villages while offering engaging activities for everyone.

Jacqui Metzloff, Waterloo Heights’ activity director, says the event drew 46 people.

The food services team served pork from caterer PigOut Roasters, which Jacqui says “was cooked to perfection,” adding the food was locally sourced and came with plenty of tasty sides.

“We also had fresh corn on the cob and baked apples from Herrle’s Country Farm Market,” she tells S&R Today, adding, “one of the huge hits this year was the dressing with veggies.”

Team members served soft drinks, beer and wine to guests, and live music was provided by local musician Henry Winter.

“The day wouldn’t have been complete without our piggy costume, worn by our zumba instructor, Jessica Dietz, who handed out chocolate bars at the end of the event,” Jacqui says.

A seating plan was made so residents could sit with their guests, but it also helped pair community seniors with residents, giving them a chance to introduce themselves, she adds.

Jacqui says the event proved to be an excellent opportunity to network and meet new people while showcasing life at Waterloo Heights.

“We made lots of new friends who we can call for future senior socials,” she says. “We had lots of volunteers helping with the event, and with a full dietary staff the event ran perfectly. Everyone had a great time.”
